The Small Farm with Big Dreams
Our Story
"If you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life."
Hello! Paul and Shawna Higel here, and the above statement couldn't be truer for us. We are a small farm with big dreams and we are passionate about caring for the land and animals. We are a new farm, and we have a few years of experience working the land, but that doesn't mean we don't always have more to learn. We are consistently researching new methods of gardening and livestock care to allow us to be better stewards of the land. We love working the earth and making sure our animals only have "one bad day". We hope that what we do allows us to bring fresh, healthy food to NE Colorado.
Our large variety of produce is grown in a no-till garden, which allows our fruits and vegetables to be free of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. We have chosen to use micro-irrigation for watering to reduce water waste and soil erosion. We operate two gardens. One for the market and one for the livestock.
The saying here goes, "Welcome to Colorado. I'm sorry you don't like the weather. Just wait five minutes and it will change." Because of the drastic weather that sometimes happens here, our pigs, chickens, turkeys, ducks, and geese are raised on pasture from April to October. At the end of October, all livestock are placed in fenced areas with sturdy shelters to keep them out of the cold and snow. We take great care in making sure that all of our livestock is fed with a balanced diet that meets their needs.
All of our produce and meat are available locally and at our Farmer's Market Stand.
How we do it
Support Small Farms
-
Small farmers have a significant impact on our food—2 billion small farmers produce 70% of the world’s food.
-
There are numerous benefits to supporting our local small farmers, and perhaps the most selfish one is that we can enjoy fresh foods, travel minimal food miles, and taste delicious.
-
In America, our food travels an average of 1,494 miles from the farm to our plates.
-
Small farmers are better able to employ sustainable farming practices because they can optimize for quality products that meet specific buyers' expectations.
-
While there are always exceptions to the rule, small farmers have more limitations when it comes to resources, so they’re incentivized by benefits such as lower water usage or using nutrients from natural sources (such as waste from fish or other animals on the farm), resulting in sustainable farming practices.
-
Remember to look beyond the organic label. Some farmers have incredibly sustainable farming practices and can’t afford the organic certification.
-
Our pigs are processed at USDA Inspected facilities and our birds are processed on the farm using USDA and CDA safety and sanitation guidelines.
