Why We Chose These Beauties

We selected the Royal Palm to raise because of its gorgeous color combination, friendly temperament, and love of bugs. These thrifty turkeys are active, excellent foragers, and good flyers. Standard weights are 16 pounds for young toms (Mature – 20-22 lbs). and 10 pounds for young hens (Mature – 12 lbs). The Royal Palm hasn’t been purposefully selected for either growth rate or muscling, but it is being used primarily as an exhibition variety. That being said, we DO raise a few turkeys for meat for ourselves and some deserving organizations who help feed the hungry.

Did you know that grocery stores lose money on their turkeys at the holidays? It costs more than $10 to raise a turkey. Turkeys eat an average of 1.25 lbs of feed per day for 126 days.

A Bird Being Watched

Royal Palm turkeys are listed in the watch list with The Livestock Conservancy.

Watch: Breeds that present genetic or numerical concerns or have a limited geographic distribution, with fewer than 2,500 annual registrations in the United States, and an estimated global population of less than 10,000. For rabbits, fewer than 200 annual registrations in the U.S., an estimated global population of less than 2,000, fewer than 500 recorded at rabbit shows in the previous 5 years, and 31-60 breeders. For poultry, fewer than 5,000 breeding birds in the U.S., with 10 or fewer primary breeding flocks, and an estimated global population of less than 10,000.

Characteristics

Somewhat smaller than most domestic turkeys, they retain natural conformation, but with a unique black and white plumage. The plumage bears a distinctive metallic black pattern on white ground. Most feathers are white with black banding, while the male’s saddle and beard are black.  Like all turkeys, the skin on the head and neck is bare (or lightly hairy in the case of the female), and its color changes from blue and white to red with emotional arousal. This is more pronounced in the male. As they mature, males grow an elongated snood drooping over the beak. Royal Palms retain their ability to fly and prefer to roost in trees, and in our case the perfectly good shelter that we built them.

Your Second Best Friend

Don't let this hen's face fool you. Royal Palm turkeys are super docile and friendly turkeys. Our Royal Palms are little escape artists and come to the back deck to tell us good morning! They are more apt to let you hold them without much of a fuss as chickens. Our pults will come up to us and eat out of our hands while sitting on our laps. It helps that we keep our flock small and can spend time with each one of them.

Royal Palm turkeys lay a large cream to brown-colored egg with speckles. They are excellent mothers, but we prefer to keep the population under control and hatch our chicks. These girls will lay only 20 - 50 eggs a year, but that's more than we need.
